Using Cited References Search in Web of Science

This guide provides practical tips on Cited References search in Web of Science

Publication & Citation Searches in Web of Science

There are two ways to find citing articles and citation counts in Web of Science (WoS):

  • Documents search allows you to retrieve a publication indexed in WoS with citation counts and a link to citing articles.
  • Cited References search includes searching of cited references* in the References of a citing article*. This can be a more thorough search as it also allows you to find
    • cited references that are not indexed in WoS
    • cited reference variants due to incorrect author, title, year and volume/issue number or missing information in the citing article's References.

*The cited reference is a publication that has been mentioned in the References of other publications, and the citing article is the publication that contains the References. --  Adapted from: The relationship between citing and cited publications - Clarivate

Why use Cited Reference Search?

1. To find publications not indexed in Web of Science but is listed in the references of cited content.

Low, E. L., & Grabe, E. (1995). Prosodic patterns in Singapore English. In Proceedings of the 13th International Congress of Phonetic Sciences (pp. 636–639).
When searching the above publication via Documents search, you will not get any matches as this publication was not indexed in Web of Science.

However, when searching the above publication via Cited References search, there are 3 records with 33 citation counts.

This can greatly boost your Publication count (+1) and your Citation Count (+33).

2. Your WoS Author Citation Report does not reflect the full extent of your citation counts.

Grabe, E., & Low, E. L. (2002). Durational variability in speech and the rhythm class hypothesis. In C. Gussenhoven & N. Warner (Eds.), Laboratory Phonology 7 (pp. 515–546). https://doi.org/10.1515/9783110197105.2.515

When searching the above publication via Cited References search, many varying records of the publication are found, but only one record with 467 citations is included in the Author Citation Report. The rest of the records, which collectively carry a total of 53 citations, are not grouped under the record with 467 citations due to one or more Cited Reference Variants. These variants include:

  1. Error in Author: Some citations may have missed out certain authors while citing.
  2. Error in Source: The citing articles may have referenced the source differently, e.g., using "Seven" instead of "7."
  3. Missing Title: Some citing articles may have included the source with the title of the article together, causing the title not to be picked up.
  4. Error in Title: Some citing articles cited the title incorrectly, e.g., "Rhythm" cited as "Rythmic."
  5. Error in Year, Vol, Issue, Page or Missing Year, Vol, Issue, Page: Some records may contain errors or omissions in these details.

Starting your search

1. Enter a name in the Cited Author field and then type a journal title or book title in the Cited Work field.

  • You may also search on Cited Year(s), Cited Volume, Cited Issue, Cited Pages, Cited Title, or Cited DOI

Note: Cited Author is a very tedious process as we need to include all the possible variants of an author’s name and verify the publications. It will be more efficient to perform a Cited Title/Work search instead.

2. Click Search.

  • Results from the Cited Reference Index that includes the publication you are searching appears on a table. Every reference on the Cited Reference Index has been cited by at least one publication indexed in WoS. The first author of a cited reference always displays in the Cited Author column. If the cited author you specified in Step 1 is not the primary author, click Show all authors to display all authors. If you retrieve too many hits, return to the Cited References search page and add criteria for Cited Year, Cited Volume, Cited Issue, or Cited Page.

3. Select cited references and cited reference variants from the index table.

  • If a cited reference listed in the title field is hyperlinked, you can click to view the record. If it is not hyperlinked, it could be due to one or more of the reasons below:
    • the cited reference is not a source article in WoS
    • the cited reference may contain incomplete or inaccurate information, and can’t be linked to a source article
    • the cited reference may fall outside the years of coverage of your subscription
    • the cited reference may fall outside the content coverage of your subscription

4. Click Search to view your results.
