About OA Week

Open Access Week logo

Open Access is an international movement that uses the Internet to unlock the doors that once hid knowledge. The Open Access movement is gaining ever more momentum around the world. Many research funders and policy makers now require the unrestricted sharing of research results.

Open Access Week is a global event, now in its 9th year, promoting Open Access as a new norm in scholarship and research.

The theme for 2016, Open for Action, encourages all stakeholders to take concrete steps to make their own work more openly available and encourage others to do the same.

A ‘megajournal’ is widely understood to be an online-only open access journal, that covers a very broad subject area and selects content based only on scientific and methodological soundness (or some variation on that statement), with a business model which allows each article to cover its own costs.
