NTU CourseReserves: NIE Course Readings Guide

A guide to NIE's new course readings management system

What is NTU CourseReserves and How Can It Help Me?

NTU CourseReserves is NIE's new course readings management system and copyright compliance tool.  It is comprehensive and dynamic, and allows instructors to create links to library resources such as journal articles and books/ebooks, digitised book chapters, as well as freely available online content.

With NTU CourseReserves, you can easily ...

  •  Create structured, annotated reading lists that include all types of materials.
  •   Allow selected collaborators to help edit/manage lists.
  •   Use analytics and reports to gain insight into usage of materials.
  •   Re-use and keep your reading lists up to date.

Electronic Resources and Digitisation

While we cannot guarantee that an online reading list ensures all your recommended reading will be online, wherever possible we will link it to an electronic resource. If you recommend a particular chapter within a printed book which we already own we may be able to scan it and offer that as a link, if it is covered by the Copyright Licensing and Administration Society of Singapore (CLASS) license.

For books covered by CLASS, a maximum of 10% or one chapter of a book may be scanned for teaching purposes. There is no restriction on copying from books which are out of copyright. For journal titles covered by CLASS, a maximum of one article per journal issue/part may be scanned for teaching purposes.

Benefits of NTU CourseReserves

Enhanced Access

NTU CourseReserves’ integration with NTULearn provides a reliable resource access point for students and staff. And by collecting course materials in one location, users have fewer barriers to finding (and re-visiting) key resources. This can save time when it comes to citing sources, as well as when creating syllabi for future courses.

Enhanced Efficiency

NTU CourseReserves reduces staff’s need to rebuild course lists each semester and provides more ownership over the course materials. Faculty can also collaborate with colleagues on lists for similar courses.  Since NTU CourseReserves is directly linked to Alma, our Library Services Platform, library staff are able to process course materials faster while making workflows more transparent.

Reading List Status Definitions

Confused about the status of your list? Login to your Reading List > More Info > and check the status info:

  • Sent (on an individual citation) - the item has been sent to the library for review but is yet to be actioned. Items with a Sent status are not visible to students
  • Being Prepared – The initial status when a list is created. The library is not processing the list at this stage.
  • Ready for Processing – The instructor sent the reading list, or any citation on the list, to the library for processing.
  • Being Processed – The library has started working on the citations in the reading list.
  • Complete – The library has finished processing the reading list and it is ready. Materials for complete citations are visible to students if the list is also published.
  • Rolled Over – A reading list rolled over by an instructor or by the library
  • Inactive – The reading list is no longer relevant.
  • Declined – The library was unable to fulfill the reading list.
