Dr Ruth Wong Hie King (1918-1982)
Founding Director, Institute of Education (1973-1976)
Principal, Teachers' Training College (1971-1972)
Dr. Ruth Wong Hie King was the founding Director of the then Institute of Education (IE). Dr Wong attended Queen's University and Harvard University under various scholarships. She later joined the Ministry of Education as Director of Research and concurrently, Principal of the Teachers' Training College (TTC) and played a key role in upgrading the then TTC to IE in 1973. She also streamlined and improved Singapore’s teacher education curriculum considerably. Although she retired in 1976, her seminal ideas, considerable achievements and the strength of her character, modesty, compassion and equanimity have impressed and positively influenced many both within and outside the education fraternity.
