NIE Library Proxy Bookmarklet

A script that facilitates authentication for access to licensed e-resources

When faced with these scenarios...

Scenario 1:
You search in Google or a journal/database website directly (not via the library portal) and find some relevant titles in the list of search results.  However, when you click on an article link, you are redirected  to a vendor or publisher's site where you are asked to pay for the full text.

Scenario 2:
You receive direct links to online articles from a friend/lecturer/yourself or direct links to the latest articles via email alerts from journals that you had subscribed to. However, when you click on an article link, you are redirected  to a vendor or publisher's site where you are asked to pay for the full text.

Scenario 3:
You search in a journal/database through a mobile app/site on your mobile device and find some relevant titles in the list of search results.  However, when you click on an article link, you cannot view or download the full text.

Solution - Use NIE Library Proxy Bookmarklet

In the above Scenarios 1 and 2, you are not accessing the links directly from the NIE Library portal and hence the publisher/vendor site does not know that you have access via subscriptions from NIE. In other words, you are a GUEST user!

Similarly, in Scenario 3, you are accessing the article from your mobile device, and you may not be recognised as an NIE user in the database mobile site or app. Even after you have sent the article citation and URL to your email address, and accessed the email on a computer, you would find yourself in Scenario 2.

What can you do?

You can of course, go back to our library portal and search in LibDiscover! or search for the relevant e-journal. HOWEVER, there's a faster way to authenticate and access the article directly >>  use the proxy bookmarklet.
