Using Cited References Search in Web of Science

This guide provides practical tips on Cited References search in Web of Science

Past 3 Year Citing Articles

Low, E. L., Grabe, E., & Nolan, F. (2000). Quantitative characterizations of speech rhythm: Syllable-timing in Singapore English. Language and Speech43(4), 377–401. https://doi.org/10.1177/00238309000430040301

Perform a Cited References search on the above publication.

If you add up the Citing Articles count manually, you will get a total of 174.

However, if you select all and click See Results, there are only 163 citing articles.

This is because our subscription does not cover all the content and we only have access to 163 articles out of 174.

The Analyze Results and Citation Report buttons provide more in-depth analysis and metrics, such as visualisations of cited references by research areas or authors, and the total number of citation and publication counts over time.

Do note that if you are doing any analysis, the dataset will be based on the 163 citing articles.

To obtain the number of WoS indexed publications that cited this publication over the past 3 years, click on Web of Science Categories and select publication years. This will give you a graph of how many of the citing articles were published over the past 10 years (Default).

You can hover over the bar graph to get the numbers for each year. The number represents the number of citing articles published in the year.

For example 7 in 2024 means 7 citing articles that was indexed by Web of Science were published in 2024.

Hover each of the year for the past 3 years to obtain the numbers.

If needed, you can obtain the publication numbers beyond 10 years by changing the Publication Years to 15, 20, or 25 (past 15, 20 or 25 years)

This is useful if you want to find out if there is a trend or correlation between your publications and the publication dates of the citing articles that have cited your publications.

How to Exclude Self-Citations in Cited Reference Search

Low, E. L., Grabe, E., & Nolan, F. (2000). Quantitative characterizations of speech rhythm: Syllable-timing in Singapore English. Language and Speech43(4), 377–401. https://doi.org/10.1177/00238309000430040301

Perform a search on the above, select all and click See Results.

At the results page, you will be able to see all 163 records listed with details.

To exclude self-citations, make use of the filter bar on the left. Select the author's name under Researcher Profiles to exclude.

Once you click Exclude, you will notice that the search has been refined and there are now 158 citing articles (excluding self-citations) instead of 163.
