In our previous examples we have demonstrated that using the Cited References Search in Web of Science is able to extract a more complete and comprehensive list of citations, Here is our recommendation on how to track these Cited References and how to compile them.
If you have a bibliography or list of all your publications, we recommend to do a Cited Work/Cited Title search for each of your publications.
1. Prepare a template. You can use the template provided by NIE Library or prepare your own.
2. Extract WoS Indexed records
- Generate WoS Citation Report.
- Export the full document.
- Copy the fields: Title, Year, Total Citations, Current Year, Past 3 Years into the corresponding fields in the template.
- In the table “Indexed by WoS” Indicate all copied records with “Y”
3. Copy publications not indexed in WoS from publication list
- Check all the publications from the WoS Citation Report against your bibliography list for Books, Book Chapters, Journal Articles and Conference Proceedings.
- Include any publications not in the WoS Citation Report into the table in the template.
4. Conduct the Cited References Search
- Search all publications using Cited References Search
- Add up the number of Citing Articles for each of the result and update Total Citations.
- Select all the results and click on see results to obtain number of verifiable articles from “XX citing articles from the Web of Science Core Collection”
Optionally, you can:
i. Collect Last 3 Years statistics
- For titles that has been indexed by WoS but also have other records not linked to the WoS Indexed article, select all the unlinked records > see results > analyze results > publication year and count the number for Current Year + Last 3 Years. Add the numbers to the statistics you previously extracted from the WoS Indexed records.
- For titles not indexed by WoS, select all the records > see results > analyze results > publication year and count the number for Current Year + Last 3 Years and update the table.
ii. Generate H-Index
- From the excel file, sort the “All Citations” column from highest to lowest.
- Record the number when the citation count is more than the “Rank” in the H-Index cell.
