Citation Research & Impact Metrics

Introduction

We recommend preparing a template to compile Journal Metrics from various sources when evaluating Journal Titles. We recommend including the following metrics in your evaluation template:

  1. Average JIF Percentile
  2. SJR Score
  3. CiteScore
  4. SNIP

In this guide, we will show you how you can obtain these metrics.

Average JIF Percentile

Find Average Journal Impact Factor (JIF) Percentile

Step 1: Connect to Journal Citation Reports (JCR).

Step 2: Enter the journal title and click on the matching journal.

Step 3: You will be brought to the Journal Profile page, where you can view the Journal Impact Factor (JIF), 5 Year JIF and other key indicators such as ranking with subject category and quartile.

 

Step 4: Scroll down to Content metrics. You will find Average JIF Percentile in this section.

Note: The average JIF percentile is the average of the sum of JIF percentiles of each category. 

Step 5: Add this metric to your template

SCImago Journal & Country Rank (SJR) Score

The SCImago Journal & Country Rank (SJR) website assesses and analyses journal and country rankings based on Scopus data. Journals can be searched by publisher, journal name or ISSN. Each journal page provides metrics such as the journal's H-index, its SJR and subject area quartile.

Find SJR Score in SJR

Step 1: Connect to SJR.

Step 2: Enter the journal title and click on the result.

Step 3: Look for the SJR Score in the SJR (Year) Box.

Step 4: Add this metric to your template.

CiteScore & SNIP

CiteScore is calculated based on Scopus' sources, you will be able to obtain this journal metrics directly via Scopus.

Find CiteScore in Scopus

Step 1: Connect to Scopus Sources.

Step 2: Select "Title" from the dropdown menu, enter the journal title and click Find sources.

 

Step 3: Find CiteScore

Source Normalized Impact per Paper (SNIP) measures the contextual citation impact by weighting citations based on the total number of citations in a subject field for a source. It helps you make a direct comparison of sources in different subject fields. Learn more about SNIP here: https://service.elsevier.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/14884/supporthub/scopus/kw/SNIP/

You will be able to obtain SNIP directly via Scopus.

Find SNIP in Scopus

Step 1: Follow steps 1-3 above to find CiteScore.

Step 2: Click on the arrow to view other metrics. 

Step 3: You can find SNIP here.

Note: The SJR Score here is the 2023 score and it may not reflect the latest SJR score. To obtain the latest score, we recommend going to SJR directly.

Step 4: Update your template with CiteScore and SNIP.
